Honoring the Hearts of Jesus and Mary in June

June holds a special place in the Catholic liturgical calendar as the month dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart celebrated on the Friday following the second Sunday after Pentecost. This beautiful devotion, which has flourished for centuries, invites us into deeper contemplation of Christ’s infinite love for humanity.

The devotion to the Sacred Heart reveals the very essence of God’s love—a love so profound that it led Christ to sacrifice Himself on the cross. When we meditate on His Sacred Heart, we encounter not just a symbol, but the living reality of divine mercy, compassion, and infinite tenderness. This heart, pierced for our salvation, continues to beat with love for each soul.

Intimately connected to this devotion is our reverence for the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Church recognizes that Mary’s heart, free from sin and perfectly united to God’s will, serves as the pathway through which we can approach her Son. Her heart, pierced by the sword of sorrow prophesied by Simeon, shares in the redemptive suffering of Christ while remaining a source of maternal comfort and intercession for all believers.

The pairing of these two devotions is no accident. Mary’s Immaculate Heart leads us to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, just as her life was entirely oriented toward Him. Through her “yes” to God’s plan, she became the vessel through which the Sacred Heart of her Son would enter our world. Her heart, full of grace and united perfectly to the Divine Will, shows us how our own hearts should respond to God’s love.

During this month of June, we are called to deeper conversion and consecration. The Sacred Heart invites us to examine our own hearts—to root out whatever prevents us from loving as Christ loves.
