This global prayer for safety and protection provides a spiritual haven of peace, strength, and reassurance during hurricane and typhoon seasons. Rooted in history, the text is a faithful adaptation of the traditional prayer composed in 1957 by Most Rev. Maurice Schexnayder (1895โ1981), Second Bishop of Lafayette (1956โ1973), following the historic devastation of Hurricane Audrey. While originally written for coastal communities facing tropical storms, this version has been gently revised to broaden its geographic scope, offering comfort to our global channel family across both the United States and the Philippines. Below, you will find the full text of the prayer to read, reflect upon, or share with loved ones facing an approaching storm.
Prayer for Protection
During Hurricane & Typhoon Season
Heavenly Father, Master of the land and the seas, we come before You today with humble hearts as weather seasons shift around the globe.
You are the calmer of the fierce winds and the protector of the vulnerable. Today, we lift up our global community in prayer.
Whether we are facing the hurricane season in the United States, or the typhoon season in the Philippines, we live under the shadow of powerful elements over which we have no control.
When the skies darken, the winds howl, and the waters rise, we ask that You stand as a shield around our homes, our properties, and our lives.
We pray for absolute safety for every family joining us in this prayer. Calm the deep anxiety that comes with the tracking of a storm. Give strength to our structures, peace to our minds, and safety to our shores.
Guard the elderly, comfort the fearful, and keep our loved ones out of harm’s way. Sustain us with a vibrant faith, knowing that no matter how loud the tempest rages, Your voice is greater than the storm.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer composed by Most Rev. Maurice Schexnayder (1957), with minor adaptations for a global audience.
