From Bethlehem to Spain
It began two thousand years ago in a quiet cave in Bethlehem, where the Holy Family took shelter from Herod’s soldiers. As Mary nursed the Infant Jesus, a few drops of her milk fell and turned the dark stones chalky white. That place, known as the Milk Grotto, has drawn mothers and hopeful couples for centuries, sparking a devotion that eventually reached Spain.
There, tradition tells of a pious man in Madrid who brought a statue of the nursing Virgin home to his expectant wife, whose illness threatened both her life and her child’s. Through her prayers before the image, she recovered and delivered a healthy baby. Word spread, and a shrine was built in Madrid in her honor.
A Mother Who Understands
In Spain the devotion took on a title that captures its heart: Nuestra Señora de La Leche y Buen Parto, or “Our Lady of the Milk and Happy Delivery.”
The imagery itself bridges the Heaven and the everyday. It shows something every mother knows well: a nursing mother, smiling as she tenderly holds her Son.
It is a striking picture of the Mother of God. Before Jesus preached, healed, or carried His Cross, He was an infant who depended entirely on His mother’s care. Mary fed Him, held Him, and kept Him close. That tenderness is exactly what draws mothers to her today.
America’s First Marian Shrine
Spanish settlers carried this devotion across the ocean, and it found a permanent home on American soil. On the grounds of Mission Nombre de Dios in St. Augustine, Florida, stands the oldest Marian shrine in the United States, near the spot where the nation’s first permanent parish Mass was celebrated on the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady, September 8, 1565.
The shrine has endured war, occupation, and hurricanes; yet the devotion never died.

If You Are Facing Infertility: Perhaps you have heard difficult news from a doctor, or years of trying have left you weary. Your sorrow is real, and God sees it. Our Lady does not dismiss your pain; she stood at the foot of the Cross and knows grief intimately. Turning to her is not a magic formula, and not every prayer is answered as we hope, but no prayer offered in faith is wasted. Some receive the child they prayed for; others discover that God is calling them to fruitfulness through adoption, spiritual parenthood, or a deeper love for each other. In every case, Mary’s intercession draws us closer to her Son.
