Novena to the Holy Face of Jesus

The Novena to the Holy Face of Jesus is a nine-day prayer devotion honoring the sacred countenance of Our Lord as it appeared during His Passion. This devotion originated through revelations given to Sister Marie of St. Peter (1816–1848), a Discalced Carmelite nun in Tours, France, who reported that Jesus desired reparation for blasphemy and the profanation of Sundays. Through this novena, the faithful contemplate Christ’s suffering with love, make reparation for sin, and seek pardon and mercy through the merits of His Passion.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY TRINITY
Most Holy Trinity, Godhead indivisible, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, our first beginning and our last end. Since You have made us after Your own image and likeness, grant that all the thoughts of our minds, all the words of our tongues, all the affections of our hearts, and all our actions, may be always conformed to Your most Holy Will, so that, after having seen You here on earth in appearances and in a dark manner by the means of faith, we may come at last to contemplate You face to face, in the perfect possession of You forever in paradise. Amen.

ACT OF CONSECRATION
O Lord Jesus, we believe most firmly in You, we love You. You are the Eternal Son of God and the Son Incarnate of the Blessed Virgin Mary. You are the Lord and Absolute Ruler of all creation. We acknowledge You, therefore, as the Universal Sovereign of all creatures. You are the Lord and Supreme Ruler of all mankind, and we, in acknowledging this Your dominion, consecrate ourselves to You now and forever.

Loving Jesus, we place our family under the protection of Your Holy Face, and of Your Virgin Mother, Mary most sorrowful. We promise to be faithful to You for the rest of our lives and to observe with fidelity Your Holy Commandments. We will never deny before men, You and Your Divine rights over us and all mankind.

Grant us the grace to never sin again; nevertheless, should we fail, O Divine Savior, have mercy on us and restore us to Your grace. Radiate Your Divine Countenance upon us and bless us now and forever. Embrace us at the hour of death in Your Kingdom for all eternity, through the intercession of Your Blessed Mother, of all Your Saints who behold You in Heaven, and the just who glorify You on earth. O Jesus, be mindful of us forever and never forsake us; protect our family.

O Mother of Sorrows, by the eternal glory which you enjoy in Heaven, through the merits of your bitter anguish in the Sacred Passion of your Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, obtain for us the grace that the Precious Blood, shed by Jesus for the redemption of our souls, be not shed for us in vain. We love you, O Mary. Embrace us and bless us, O Mother. Protect us in life and in death. Amen.

Did Jesus have brothers and sisters?

Did Jesus have siblings (brothers and sisters)?

It’s one of the most frequently asked questions about Jesus and His family. The Gospels mention “the brothers of Jesus” several times, leading many to wonder: Did Mary have other children after Jesus? Who were James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas mentioned in Scripture? The answer lies in understanding the language, culture, and context of Scripture.

NOWHERE in the Bible does it say that Mary herself gave birth to anyone other than Jesus.

James the son of Alphaeus — identified as son of Alphaeus (Matthew 10:3) and son of “the other Mary” (Mary the wife of Clopas), not the Virgin Mary (Matthew 27:56).

Joseph — also identified as son of “the other Mary” (Mary the wife of Clopas), not the Virgin Mary (Matthew 27:56).

Jude — identifies himself as “brother of James” (Jude 1:1), not as a son of Mary and Joseph.

Simon — Scripture never identifies Simon as a son of the Virgin Mary.

James the son of Zebedee — brother of John the apostle, clearly identified as a son of Zebedee and Salome (Matthew 27:56, Mark 10:35). No relation to Mary and Joseph.

John the son of Zebedee — brother of James, son of Zebedee and Salome. He is the very disciple Jesus entrusted His mother to at the cross (John 19:26-27) — which Jesus would never have done if Mary had biological sons of her own.

WHY THE CONFUSION?

The Language Issue

In Hebrew and Aramaic (the languages Jesus and His family spoke), there was no specific word for “cousin.” The word “ach” (brother) was used for brothers, half-brothers, cousins, nephews, and even close relatives. When the New Testament was written in Greek, Jewish writers continued this practice with the word “adelphos.”

We see this throughout Scripture:

Abraham calls Lot his “brother” (Genesis 14:14 KJV), but Lot was actually his nephew.
Jacob is called the “brother” of Laban (Genesis 29:15 KJV), but Laban was his uncle.
1 Chronicles 23:22 (KJV) says the sons of Kish married “their brethren”—their cousins.
In 1 Corinthians 15:6, Paul says Jesus appeared to “more than five hundred brothers” after His resurrection. Obviously Jesus didn’t have 500 biological brothers—Paul meant fellow believers. This shows clearly that “brothers” was commonly used for spiritual kinsmen, not just biological siblings.

Who Were Jesus’ “Brothers”?

Scripture actually gives us clues. In Matthew 13:55, the “brothers” of Jesus are named: James, Joseph (Joses), Simon, and Judas. But in Matthew 27:56 and Mark 15:40, we learn that James and Joseph (Joses) were sons of “the other Mary”—not the Blessed Virgin Mary. This Mary was likely Mary of Clopas, mentioned at the Cross in John 19:25.

So at least two of these “brothers” had a different mother!

The Evidence at the Cross

Perhaps the strongest argument: When Jesus was dying on the Cross, He entrusted His mother to the Apostle John, saying “Behold, your mother” (John 19:27). If Mary had other biological children, this would have been a shocking insult to them—care of a widowed mother was the eldest son’s duty, passing to younger sons if necessary. Jesus would never have violated this sacred obligation if Mary had other children. The fact that He gave her to John, who was not a relative, strongly suggests she had no other children.

Early Church Testimony

The earliest Christians, including those who knew the Apostles personally, believed in Mary’s perpetual virginity. This includes St. Ignatius of Antioch (who knew the Apostles), St. Irenaeus, Origen, and many others. Even the Protestant reformers Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli affirmed Mary’s perpetual virginity!

The “Novena for the Poor Souls in Purgatory” is a nine-day prayer devotion to assist those who have passed on in their journey toward heaven. By dedicating nine days to prayer, we can ease the purification of these souls and help them attain the eternal joy of God’s presence. This act of spiritual charity not only benefits the departed but also deepens our own faith and reminds us of the communion of saints. Participating in this novena allows us to express love beyond earthly boundaries and to play a role in the divine mercy that leads souls to their heavenly home.

Manifold are the sufferings which these Blessed Souls must endure, but the greatest of all is the reflection that their sins in life are the cause of their present torments.

The second pain which causes these Holy Souls much suffering is the time lost in life when they might have gained merits for Heaven; and the thought that they were unable to repair this loss, because the time of life and merit is passed.

Woe to me, unhappy being, so many years have I already spent on earth and have earned naught but Hell! I give Thee thanks, O Lord, for granting me time even now to atone for my sins. My good God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee. Another great pain of the Holy Souls is caused by the hideous vision of their guilt, for which they now suffer. In this life the hideousness of sin is not seen as in the life to come; and this is one of the greatest sufferings in Purgatory.

Day 4

Fourth Day – Meditation [Pray video for Day 4]
The pain that afflicts these Holy Souls most, the spouses of Jesus, is the thought of having, during life, by their sins, displeased God, Whom they so ardently love. Some penitents have felt so much pain and sorrow in thinking of their offenses, that they died of grief. The Souls in Purgatory understand far better than we do the claim that God has to our love; they love Him with all their strength. Hence, at the thought of having offended Him during life, they experience pain that surpasses all other pain.

Fourth Day – Prayer
O my God! because Thou art infinite goodness, I am sorry with my whole heart for having offended Thee. I would rather die than ever offend Thee again. Give me holy perseverance; have pity on me, and have pity on those Holy Souls that burn in the cleansing fire and who love Thee with all their hearts. O Mary, Mother of God, come to their assistance with thy powerful intercession.

Another great suffering of these Holy Souls is their ignorance of the hour of their deliverance from Purgatory. Though they are certain of being released one day, the uncertainty of the hour of when their Purgatorial term will end gives them great pain.

Sixth Day – Meditation [Prayer video for Day 6]
The Holy Souls are, indeed, comforted by the recollection of the Passion of Jesus Christ, and the Holy Sacrament of the Altar, since they know they are saved by the Passion of Jesus Christ, and have received, and still receive, so much consolation from Holy Masses and Holy Communions. Nevertheless, they are greatly pained by the recollection of their ingratitude for these two great gifts of the love of Jesus Christ.

Sixth Day – Prayer
O my Divine Redeemer, Thou didst die for me on the Cross and hast so often united Thyself with me in Holy Communion, and I have repaid Thee only with ingratitude. Now, however, I love Thee above all things, O supreme God; and I am more grieved at my offenses against Thee than at any other evil. I would rather die than offend Thee again. A further great sorrow of these Holy Souls consists in their ardent desire for the Beatific Vision. Slowly and painfully the moments of their Purgatorial imprisonment pass by; for they love God deeply, and desire to be delivered from their sad state in order to praise Him forever.

O God, Father of Mercy, satisfy this, their ardent desire! Send them Thy holy Angel to announce to them that Thou, their Father, art now reconciled with them through the suffering and death of Jesus, and that the moment of their deliverance has arrived. Another bitter sorrow of these Souls is caused by their reflection that God had bestowed upon them so many graces not granted to others, and that they compelled Him, by their sins, to condemn them to these sufferings. they had deserved Hell, but were pardoned and saved only by the mercy of God.

O my God! I also am one of these ungrateful beings, having received so many graces, and yet despised Thy love; and deserve to be cast by Thee into Hell. Great are all the sufferings of the Holy Souls in Purgatory: the fire, the grief, the darkness; the uncertainty of the time of their deliverance from prison. but the greatest of all these sorrows is this: that these Holy Souls are separated from their Divine Spouse, and deprived of His Beatific Vision.

O my God! how was it possible that I, for so many years, have borne tranquilly the separation from Thee and Thy holy grace! Henceforth, I shall love Thee above all things. I am deeply sorry for having offended Thee. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance, and do not permit that I should ever again fall into sin. Have compassion on the Holy Souls suffering in Purgatory. I pray Thee, moderate these sufferings; shorten the time of their misery; call them soon unto Thee in Heaven, that they may behold Thee face to face, and forever love Thee. Seven Sorrows of Mary Rosary

The “Seven Sorrows Of Mary Rosary” invites the faithful to meditate deeply on the seven moments of intense sorrow that pierced the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary throughout her life. This ancient devotion, also known as the Rosary of the Seven Dolors, calls us to accompany Our Lady through her greatest sufferings as the Mother of our Savior. The First Sorrow of Mary – The Prophecy of Simeon

Let us enter into the sorrow that filled Mary’s heart when the devout Simeon, while blessing the Holy Family in the temple, prophesied that her divine Child would be a sign of contradiction and that a sword of sorrow would pierce her own soul.

The Fourth Sorrow of Mary – Mary Meets Jesus Carrying the Cross

Chaplet of St. Michael the Archangel

The “Chaplet of St. Michael the Archangel” devotion was revealed by Our Lord Jesus Christ to the Portuguese Carmelite nun Antónia d’Astónaco in 1751. This prayer honors Saint Michael the Archangel and the nine choirs of angels through nine salutations. The devotion carries Christ’s own promise that whoever prays this chaplet daily will be accompanied by an angel from each of the nine choirs during their lifetime and at the hour of death, making it both a shield of protection and a pathway to the heavenly court.
